Arctic 2030

Arctic 2030 was our second game, run in Spring 2025. Engaging with the growing geopolitical problems posed by melting arctic sea, and the peculiar threats America has presently levied vis-a-vis the sovereignity of arctic states like Canada and Greenland, the Arctic 2030 game was designed to explore a limited war with modern technology an iceless extreme North.

In fact, the war was hardly limited at all. Nine players participated, controlling various elements in the armed forces of America, Canada, China, Denmark, Norway, and Russia. The conflict quickly spiraled out of control, as totalizing incentives drove the war to ever-further theatres. By the time we concluded, Canada was reduced to the status of American Associated State, Estonia had become a Russian proxy, and the squabling EU had collapsed into a state of total dysfunction. So far as we can tell, the era of great power cabinet wars is well and truly dead.

The general archive for the campaign can be downloaded here. An extensive essay on the campaign (Record of an Arctic War) is available via substack, as part of the Letters from Asphodel initiative.
